2015 Open Day - 'Try Sailing for Free !'

South Staffordshire Sailing Club invites you and your family to 'Try Sailing for FREE' on Saturday 4th April 2015 as the club once again shows off its fleet of modern training boats that will give even more people in the local community new chances to learn to sail.

This fun-filled Open Day on Gailey Lower Pool runs from 10am to 4pm.

South Staffs, the 2011 RYA Club of the Year, prides itself on offering affordable sailing for all, so anyone really can go and get involved whatever age, experience or background.

Thanks to a £10,000 grant from the Sport England Small Grants fund, the Open Day will be a chance for people get to try out the club's two GP14 training boats, that will be used in the club's RYA Start Sailing courses beginning on 22nd April 2015.

Martin Warburton, South Staffs SC Commodore, explains: "It's the club's aim for absolutely anyone to be able to learn to sail and regularly go sailing if they want to. We do this by creating low cost options, having fleets of boats people can take advantage of to keep costs down and creating an inclusive, welcoming atmosphere.

"GP14s can be sailed by three people at a time, and these new boats will give even more people the chance to learn to sail in the first place and then stay involved."

This year the club, which celebrated its 60th anniversary year in 2014 will once again run it's official ‘Plus 1' group after a successful 2014 campaign.

After completing the initial Learn to Sail course, which runs on Wednesday evenings for five weeks, participants can then ‘buddy up' with an instructor or another club member to keep developing their skills in relaxed, informal, fun sessions.

Martin added: "With other racing courses going on at the same time and after sailing social time in the bar, there is a real buzz around the club and people see sailing for what it actually is; a great outdoor activity with a brilliant social scene."

All you need for the Open Day are soft shoes, waterproofs and a change of clothing, the club will supply everything else you need. Refreshments are available.

South Staffs SC, located just off junction 12 off the M6, is a recognised RYA Training Centre, meaning it conforms to the highest standards of quality and safety.

RYA Start Sailing introduces people to the basics and gives them the best first experience in the sport, while also providing opportunities for them to then stay involved and keep improving their skills at friendly, welcoming sailing clubs.
