Bumper Open Day Sparks Sailing Sell Out at SSSC

Penkridge based South Staffordshire Sailing Club welcomed young and old this weekend as families flocked to the Club's annual Open Day and places on the first Learn to Sail course of the year sold out.

"The Club runs two Learn to Sail courses each year and they are always over subscribed," explains Senior Instructor Roy Alexander. "We are an approved RYA training centre so the courses have to meet rigorous safety and teaching standards. There are still a few places left on our June course so I would advise anyone who is interested to sign up soon!

"All of the instructors at the club are volunteers so that we can keep the prices down for those wanting to take up the sport. We also run practice sessions throughout the summer for new students and during the time they are learning they can take part in all of the other club activities so its is great value for money."

An RYA Club of the Year winner, South Staffs benefited from a Sports England grant last year to buy two new training boats and is planning on enlarging the Club house this year as part of its on-going development plans. There was even a Royal seal of approval when Princess Anne visited the Club last summer as part of its 60th anniversary celebrations.

"Whilst the Learn to Sail courses are aimed at adults we run a separate structured training programme for under 18's," continues Roy. "The emphasis is very much on learning a new skill in a fun and safe environment. Coaching for this age group starts mid-April and runs until October. This year we are also running an Under 18's taster day on 16th May as part of the RYA's 'Push The Boat Out' celebration of sailing."
