Useful Info - This Weekend

It's the Lark Open on Saturday, even if you're not taking part why not pop along and watch the racing, the bar will be open!

If you've not already signed up for your duties for the year ahead we are in particular need of galley duties, please sign up asap if you can cover one in the next few months.

It is the third round of the Spring Series on Sunday. There are 3 races on Sunday, AM PY race at 11.30am, and two class races at 1.45pm and 3.30pm in the afternoon.

Please note that from this week coming the deadline for GNF submissions will change to 9pm on Wednesdays. As usual, send any stories in via the publicity email.

New interactive club calendar - synchronise it with your phone or tablet!

The Sailing Committee have recently introduced a new SSSC Calendar which can be seen HERE. This includes all sailing events, training and social events and will continue to be updated through the year.

It is now possible to synchronise the club calendar with other calendar programs such as Google Calendar, Outlook or iCal so that whenever a change is made it is automatically updated in your own personal calendar too. To do this, click on the blue menu button with 3 white stripes (just above ‘Sunday’) and then click on ‘iCalendar Feeds’. This will allow you to subscribe to sections that are relevant to you, or the entire calendar.
Useful info - New Midlands RYA team looking for volunteers.

The newly formed RYA team are still looking for help from volunteers in a number of specific roles to join them in supporting all RYA Affiliated Clubs in the region and to promote the RYA, as well as maintain the previous committee role of being the voice for clubs back into the RYA.
Please contact them if you would like to get involved with wider RYA activities.

Event - Lark Open

Part of the Lark ‘Great 8’ Series our Lark Open is one not to be missed! Won by a visitor for the past two years, will 2016 be the year to take back the glory?! There will be 3 races, 2 to count with the first race starting at 11.30am for only £12.

The plan for the social on the Saturday night will include an Indian takeaway (£15 per head - starter, main and sides) to arrive at 6.30 followed by music and dancing. We need to get an idea for numbers so please let Chris White or Nic Booth whether you plan to attend the event and if you would like to order the meal. There will be afternoon cakes following the racing - please bake a cake (shop made fine too...) and bring it along if possible.

Please contact Chris White on 07756 349875 to confirm or for more information.

Race Report - Last Sunday

The final race of the day on Sunday deserves a little write up of its own. Despite a lot of the GP14s being off the water at the moment there were still six out for the last race. With some less experienced helms on the water the fleet quickly split into to two after the first leg. Terry Edwards and Darren Heath ended up leading the race with Chris Beddow and myself (Michelle) in hot pursuit.

However, one boat had ignored the form book and chosen to extract itself from the back of the fleet and push for the lead. Take a bow Dave Morgan and nine year-old son Finn! Despite not flying the spinnaker and despite Finn being in single digits we just could not shake them off. After some good tactical sailing involving using Mike Davies in his Solo to good effect we took the lead from Terry and Darren and eased out a slight gap. I happened to glance behind at one point and saw Terry and Darren get overtaken by Dave and Finn. As we crossed the line Dave and Finn had a good final beat and held on to take 2nd place. I’m just glad there wasn’t another lap else they might have charged us down for 1st!

Save the Date - Tuesday Race Training

Helms wanted!

We have a few crews wanting to take part in the Race Training. Any helms that want to take part but do not have a crew available, then do apply as we may be able to match you up.

Race training will change in 2016! Firstly we will aim to run Adult & Junior sessions at the same time. Secondly these will take place on a Tuesday evening before the club race. The advantage of this is that the theme of the night can be practised immediately after the training session in a proper race environment with a race coach on hand to give help and support during the race.

As always there will be a debriefing session after the sailing which will be held in the club house.

The aim is to start promptly at 6.30pm rigged & ready. The club race start is 7.30 but we hope to arrange a junior start or training start 5 minutes after the start of the club race. Junior boats & those NOT in the club start will be finished by the coach after about 45 minutes but will not qualify for any trophies!

Although the galley is not usually open on a Tuesday evening we hope to offer a “ploughmans” or sandwiches for those coming straight from work or school. If this is of interest please let us know when you complete the Entry Form for these training sessions.

There will probably need to be at least 2 groups to cater for different standards already reached. Numbers will also affect how the evening is arranged so If interested please complete the attached “application form”. This MUST be received by me by Friday 18th March to ensure your participation.

Email or hand application form to Tony Hotchkiss:  tonyberks@gmail.com

Download the Application Form.

South Staffs Social

Details are out for the Lark Open Social, it’s open to all but we Nic Booth needs an idea about numbers, please reply in the Facebook event if you are looking to go or let Nic know directly. The plan is for Indian Takeaway (3 courses, £15) followed by music and dancing.

Dance Classes - The final two Tuesday night dancing sessions until the autumn are 15 March and 12 April, 8pm start, anyone who is late has to perform the can-can for the group.....

South Staffs on Tour

That thing in that sunny place that half of the Club are obsessed with at the moment is now dangerously close with our sailors starting to arrive at the event holiday destination a week on Saturday! There will be plenty of updates when we are out there, at the risk of invoking some serious jealously from those back at the Club.

Once Barbados is over the focus for many, in all the fleets, will be on planning the season ahead, the travelling event links are below, if you are going to an event let us know and we will give you a special GNF mention.

Capsize of the Week

The breeze on Sunday was a leisurely 10ish mph, shifty but not gusty, with very little chance of a capsize I thought…..The winners of this week’s award had a good first race of the day. Over lunch they received many plaudits from fellow sailors and must have gone into the second race feeling quite happy.

Race 2 started at number 3 and as Chris and myself were approaching the island and looking to put a tack in I saw Terry Edwards  and Darren Heath a boat length ahead put in their first tack of the race. It had dropped off for the last race so roll tacks were advised. Watching them I was thinking that they had really committed to that tack and was quietly impressed. Until, that is, the mast just kept on going past a nice acute angle, racing towards us, and then ending up parallel to the water.

It was very kind of them to capsize so close but it was then difficult to focus on the race with the laughter that ensued. It turns out the boys just had a little too much for lunch and weighed down forgot to move across the boat to right it, just a salad for you two next week!

New Pics

All of the Dinner Dance pictures are now in the gallery, thanks to snapper Caroline Brandon for the share.

Facebook Fun

Not since the GP14 coastguard incident that ended up national news has so much been made out of so little. The Daily Mail’s ‘wind-powered’ boat capsize story was a great share by James Croxford to the Facebook Group this week, if this is news, watch out anyone who capsizes this weekend as I’m pitching the story into the national press!

And finally…Roy Alexander posted some great pics in the Facebook Group this week. Slightly reminiscent of a scene from Oliver the caption could be, “Please Sir, can I have some more (gravel)?”

If you ever have anything you want to share with other Club members or the world at large you can post directly Facebook page, Group, tweet @SSSCTweet or email: publicity@southstaffssailingclub.co.uk the deadline for Good News Friday each week is 9pm Wednesdays.
