2009 Topper Open Meeting Report

23 Toppers arrived to a sunny but gusty and shifty South Staffs for round 6 of the Midland Traveller Circuit sponsored by Purple Marine.

Race 1 began with a large wind shift and a general recall as the line became hugely port biased. After resetting the line the fleet got away with just an individual recall. Dan Venables (Sutton / Shustoke) took an early lead but was quickly over hauled by his brother Matt. Matt won the race from Ian Payne (Draycote) and Andy Bridgman (Burghfield) with Chris Berry (Cransley) making a good recovery to 4th after a bad start.

Race 2 saw a clear start with Pete Newbury (Earlswood) taking an early lead from Ian and Will Alloway (Northampton). Difficult conditions at the gybe mark saw a large raft form and much changing of positions. Matt pulled off an over taking manoeuvre on Ian at the final mark to win the race from Ian with Chris in 3rd and Pete dropping to 4th.

Since Matt had won the event, the race was now on for 2nd as any one of Ian, Chris and Andy could still take this position. There was a general recall on the start but once they were away Ian took an early lead from Andrew Stott (Redesmere) and Pete. Some confusion over the course lead to much changing of positions and a few retirements leaving Pete to take the race win from Chris and Ian.
